A Surat court is hearing a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi, who reached the city this morning to make his final remarks in the case. The defamation suit was filed by a Gujarat BJP MLA over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the ‘Modi surname’.
The MLA from the Surat-West seat had alleged that Rahul Gandhi had defamed the entire Modi community by saying “How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” while addressing a poll rally in 2019.
It is reported that Rahul Gandhi replied: He is no guilty while the proceedings were going on.
Rahul Gandhi is in Surat court to defend himself in the criminal defamation case over his 2019 remark on the ‘Modi surname’.
At an election rally held at Kolar in Karnataka on April 13, 2019, Rahul Gandhi had reportedly asked, “Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi… how come they all have Modi as the common surname. How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?”
Chief Judicial Magistrate of Surat AN Dave had directed Rahul Gandhi to remain present on June 24 to record his final statement in the defamation case filed by Purnesh Modi.
