The farmers who have grown Tomato in Pattikonda of Kurnool district are in trouble. They are not getting even Rs 1 per kilo. Here in Hyderabad we are paying around Rs 25 per kilo.
The farmers have thrown the Tomatoes on the roads. They are on a dharna on the roads after dumping the crop on the roads. The farmers are not even getting Rs 30 for two baskets.
They sell Tomatoes in baskets. This has been the trend since last several years. They were not getting the remunerative prices in the local markets.
They don’t have proper cold chains to store the Tomatoes in bulk. In Hyderabad Tomatoes are sold at Rs 50 for 4 Kilos, but the quality is not that good.
The issue has been referred to the Ministers in the state. The Government has been trying to create some cold chains so that Tomatoes can be stored and sold for remunerative rates.
Right now the farmers are in deep trouble and unable to sell the crop for the MSP. Lets hope the Government would resolve the issue in the near future.
