Project to curb human trafficking

To curb human trafficking (HT), Telangana State Police, Women Safety Wing spearheaded a comprehensive project with the cooperation of Tharuni, a Non-Governmental Organization, and the British Deputy High Commission, Hyderabad. Telangana State Government appointed 31 special police units (Anti-Human Trafficking Units – AHTUs) to prevent the crime.

As a part of this project, AHTU staff participated in a 2-day online training on February 2nd and 3rd. Inaugural speech was given by Smt. B Sumathi IPS, Dy. Inspector General of Police, Women Safety Wing as focusing on the origin of AHTUs in all police units of theState and the recent data of HT in Telangana and their relevance for grassroots level functioning.

Swati Lakra IPS, Addl. Director General of Police, Women Safety Wing addressed the participants on the importance of AHTU works and the key to success of this work has convergence with other stakeholders.

Jitender, IPS., Addl. DGP, Law & Order, TS, along with Smt. Swati Lakra IPS & Smt. B Sumathi IPS launched the ‘Training Handbook for Police Personnel’ in AHTUs made specifically for this project by Tharuni. He addressed the participants on how individual efforts fall short and this atrocity needs to be fought with collaborative effort.

Triveni Singh IPS, SP, Cyber Crimes, UP Police, trained the participants on ‘Cyber Trafficking M.O (Modus Operandi) focusing on child trafficking and child sexual abuse. Many case examples were cited and potential limitations were also addressed during the training session.

Umapathi IPS, (Retd. IGP) interacted and trained the AHTU staff enlightening role of police in curbing all conventional types of trafficking. The elaborated pre-rescue, rescue and post-rescue protocolsand covered all topics.

Detailed case studieswith respect to AHT were discussed by K. Chandrasheker, Inspector of Police, AHTU, Rachakonda, Ramesh, Sub Inspector of Police, PS S.R. Nagar, Hyderabad and Janaki Reddy, Inspector of Police,Yadagirigutta Town, Rachakonda concerned to cyber trafficking, child trafficking and Labour trafficking.
