Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi can be called as the worst performer of the year 2016, there is no doubt about it. With his mother Sonia the Chief of the Congress party going to hospital now and then he stepped into her shoes but could not make any difference to the party and also the cadres.
Demonetisation was one of the best issues if properly taken up by the Congress. He warned of an earth quake in the parliament and then went and surrendered to PM Modi in his office.
The opposition which tried to support Rahul, retreated. He pointed about Modis corruption and some evidence which was age old. But the same papers had the names of the Congress leaders also. The evidence belonged to 2013.
On the other hand the BJP has won most of the seats in the local elections and proved that the people at the grass root level were with the Government on Demonetisaton.
The UP elections will be an acid test for Rahul and if they can succeed in UP, the credit will be given to Rahul and then he might be elevated to the post of AICC President.
The Khat sabhas showed that people were interested in taking cots and not the words of Rahul. Most of the states are slowly moving into the BJP account. Rahul talks about building the party from grass root level. But he is not doing anything for it. Congress party has now become a National party at regional level.
As things stand the BJP will emerge more powerful in the near future. Some leaders are looking at Priyanka Gandhi openly. But it might take some more time for the party. Even Prashant Kishore the strategist is unable to make a strategy in containing the BJP.
Next year will be crucial for Rahul. If Rahul becomes the President of Congress, BJP will be very happy as they can play with him, ridicule him, hood wink him and chide him.
The UP results will decide the future of Rahul.
