Trends show the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a slight edge over a resurgent Congress in Gujarat while in Himachal Pradesh it is clearly ahead after counting of votes began sharp at 8 am today.
The BJP and Congress – buoyed this time by traditional BJP voters Patidars and OBCs – was locked in a close fight after a few hours of counting.
n Himachal Pradesh, which has alternated between the BJP and the Congress for decades, the BJP was cruising with nearly two-third majority after a few hours of counting.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who at one point was trailing behind his Congress rival Indranil Rajyaguru in Rajkot West, pulled ahead after a few rounds of counting. His deputy Nitin Patel is not so lucky yet, and is trailing from Mehsana behind Congress candidate Jivabhai Patel.
