Rather than blaming the pitch at Pune where the hosts were routed in less than three days time, the Indians should now think positively of the second match which is beginning in two days of time at the Chinnaswamy stadium, Bangalore.
In Bangalore generally the pitch favours the batsmen, that is what we see in 20-20 matches. But, if a turner is prepared it might backfire the home team again as the Aussies spinners O’Kofee and Lyon were almost unplayable in the first Test at Pune, where they enjoyed the conditions.
That is why the experts always say toss becomes vital on sub-continent pitches where the balls tends to turn quite often.
India of course lost a golden opportunity to break the 22 Test match win record, which the Aussies still hold. Nineteen India won and the Australians put a break at Pune with fine allround performance. There was contribution from each and everyone, though O’ Kofee with twelve wickets played a key role in that fantastic 333-run huge win.
The question now is will India make a couple of changes to make a comeback? They should bring in the local player Karun Nair to strengthen batting. Unfortunately he had to make way for Ajinkya Rahane after his fine triple century against England in Chennai recently.
In bowling too the home team may drop Jayant Yadav or Ishant, who were not effective in Pune. Umesh bowled beautifully in both the innings and he lacked adequate support at the other end.
This Australian side, although underrated by many experts can’t be taken lightly now. The win at Pune was good morale booster for them and they can put pressure on the Indians, if Warner, Shan Marsh make big scores to help Smith who is in terrific form.
Warner knows the wicket better as he played so many occasions on this wicket in IPL. He was brilliant in the last year final against Bangalore Royal Challengers. And he looked in good touch in Pune too. Indians must be targeting him as he scores run at a brisk rate.
