Gambling in form or the other is going on in Southern states in the name of Sankranthi. Arenas for cockfights, sheep fights and other forms of gambling have been arranged in many areas in the state of Andhra Pradesh and some areas of Telangana.
The police closed the dens in some areas, but in some places the local MLAs launched the Gambling arenas. People from all walks of life participated in this gambling and the business was supposed to be in crores for the last three days.
Some of them have lost few properties in big stakes it is reported. TDP leaders and YSRC leaders participated in big states in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
Some cocks who died in the fights were sold in auction for big bucks and biryani was cooked in the fields. The Toll plazas from Telangana to Andhra made good collections for the festival.
In some areas police collected mamools to allow gambling dens. The YSRC Government closed its eyes on cock fighting, bull races, sheep fights and also pig fights in some places.
The festival was colourful in rural areas when compared to towns. AP CM Jaganmohan Reddy on the other hand, performed Gow Puja on the eve of Kanuma the last day of Sankranthi.
Today is the day the animals are worshipped and given all the respect.
