Smrithi Sthal is nothing exclusive for Vajpayee. It is the designated place of cremation for the Presidents and the Prime Minister that has been earmarked earlier b the Government as there was no extent of more land for the same.
Former PM and Bharata Atal Bihari Vajpayee was cremated here with the full state honours at the central Rashtriya Smrithi Sthal on the banks of Yamuna, the designated place for the Presidents, Vice presidents and also the Prime Ministers.
The last rites of Vajpayee were performed on an elevated platform surrounded by greenery, at the National Memorial located between the PMs Nehru at Shanti Van and Lal Bahadur Shastry that is Vijay Ghat.
The Smriti Sthal which came into prominence was a memorial that was proposed following concerns over shrinking land resources in the capital.
The Union cabinet gave its approval for the construction of Smrithi Sthal near Rajghat for performing the last rites of the departed national leaders as well as public gatherings at the samadhis complex near Ekta Sthal in New Delhi in May 2013.
But many of them were of the opinion that acres of land would be allocated for the memorial of Vajpayee by the BJP. It has to be seen what would the BJP do for the leaders Memorial in the near future.
