Minister for Municipal Administration KT Rama Rao was very serious over the way men are being used for cleaning the man holes in city.
KTR wanted the hi-tech machinery to be used to clean the sewers instead of human beings entering the holes and losing their lives in the process.
Commenting on the recent manhole tragedy at Ayyappa Society, the state’s minister said this week that focus must return on the use of equipment for the job.
“I have directed the officials from the city’s Sewerage Board not to permit manual cleaning of manholes; they should instead use equipment to avoid such unfortunate incidents, necessary precautionary measures should be taken.”
A sensitising training programme was conducted for sewerage workers of HMWS&SB on the use of safety equipment and the need for taking safety measures while dealing with sewerage problems. On August 13, three people died inside a manhole near Ayyappa Society in the city.
Several incidents of this kind occurred from time to time, but no one thought of replacement of manual cleaning with the hi-tech equipment.
The dynamic KTR ruled out using humans for this work and said that only machines will clean the sewers from now on which is a good sign for the workers.
