D.Prabhakar Rao, Chairperson/SRPC & CMD/TSGENCO & TSTRANSCO presided over the 42nd Southern Region Power Committee meeting today at Bengaluru and stated that when the entire nation was passing through critical power situation, the southern states were able to counter the challenges effectively and met all-time high peak demand of 60,876 MW in the month of Apr,2022. The Southern Region has handled a huge demand very deftly with minimum deviations and strived hard to extend the quality and reliable power to all categories of consumers to the maximum extent possible.

Despite facing many constraints, all constituents of SR met their respective peak demands such as Tamil Nadu has met 17,563MW, Karnataka recorded 14,818MW. Telangana has touched 14,160MW, AP has met 12,293MW, Kerala recorded 4,385MW & Pondicherry at 467MW (in different months of 2021-22).

The corona pandemic affected all sections and the power sector is no exception. Several projects of Generation, Transmission & Distribution have slowed down and adversely affected the financials of the power sector. Despite facing tough challenges on several fronts, the installed capacity of the Southern Region is increased from 1,15,165 MW (as on 31.03.2021) to 1,18,313 MW (as on 31.03.2022) with capacity addition of 3,148MW during the last financial year. Southern Region is having 30% of installed capacity of country & consumption of energy of SR is 27% of the country.

Simultaneously, the transmission network in SR has been further strengthened for effective evacuation of power and 400KV lines to an extent of 1862 circuit kms were commissioned in the southern region during last FY 2021-22.

There is an urgent need for adopting the latest automation techniques in Load-Generation Balance for effective economic operations and to avoid any possible human errors.

Bringing in newer technologies, process automation, innovation and creativity are essential for foolproof grid stability.

The Member Secretary, SRPC Asit Singh, representatives from all southern states TS, AP, TN, Karnataka, Kerala & Union Territory Pondicherry and Directors of TSTRANSCO T.Jagath Reddy, B.Narsing Rao & Directors of TSGENCO B. Lakshmaiah, CE P.Ratnakar Rao, SEs P.Suresh Babu, Ega Hanuman, R Srinivasa Rao have participated in 42nd SRPC meeting at Bengaluru.
