Now the Petrol and diesel are cheaper when compared to a Kg of Tomato. It has reached Rs 150 per Kg. Due to rains, the crop is very less in the market.
Around 700 quintals is reaching Hyderabad in place of around 4000 quintals on a daily basis. In the Madanpally market, the rate at this point in time is Rs 144 per Kg .Rs 3600 per 25 Kg per box .
The crop of Tomato is lost in Chittoor due to heavy rains. Tomatoes usually cost around Rs 20 per kg. There were days when the sellers just dumped in on roads as there was no one to purchase them.
There were days where they sold it for Rs 2 a Kg. Lack of cold storage chain is another issue for this crop. There were times when the Tomatoes were dumped as feed to the animals.
When the crop was very high it was dumped on roads, and now the rain has washed away the crop. Both the reasons have put the farmer in trouble.
The rate will go up further in the coming days. But the Government can import from other states and bring the tomatoes rate down in the next two days.
