In 1951 Vajpayee started the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and was national secretary of the party.
From 1957-77 he was the leader of Jana Sangh parliamentary party.

He was the Chairman of Government assurances from 1966-67.

Vajpayee was the Chairman of the PAC from 1967-70.

After the death of Upadhyaya, Atalji was the president of the party from 1968-73.

Vajpayee was the Minister for external affairs in 1977.

Vajpayee was the first President of the BJP from 1980-1986.

In 1996 BJP won the election and Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of the country. He was dethroned after 13 days.

Later he got the power in and was in the seat till 1999 for 13 months.

After this, he again became the PM for the third time.

In 2004 he passed on the leadership to Advani.

In 2005 he retired from politics.
