The hot days of the season are here and pet owners should make themselves aware of some of the dangers that the summer can bring for their animals. Humane Society International-India offers some simple tips that can make your pets living easier in the summertime.
Ensure that your pet has access to complete shade and ample water all the time. Dogs and cats quickly dehydrate, so make sure you provide them with plenty of clean, fresh water.
Never leave your pet alone in a closed vehicle on a hot day. Temperature skyrocket inside a closed vehicle during summer and that can give your pet a fatal heatstroke. Besides, it’s illegal to keep animals unattended for a long time in parked cars.
Leave a fan running for your pet in the room he is in. Refrain from tying them in balconies, terraces, outside the gate or any other area where they are exposed to the sun.
Avoid any vigorous activity or outdoor game that leaves your pet panting for breath. Limit your walking times to non-peak hours before 9 am and after 6 pm during summer.
Don’t subject your pet’s feet to the hot pavement. It can burn his or her tender paws quickly overheat the animal and can lead to heatstroke.
Get an early summer check-up done for your pet. Ask your vet how to keep pets free from flea and ticks or start a safe flea and tick control program.
If your pet displays symptoms of heat stroke including panting, dehydration, warm dry skin, failure to respond to commands, rapid heartbeat and collapse, move them immediately to an air-conditioned room and offer plenty of water. Rush to your vet if their condition doesn’t improve soon.
Keeping your dog and cat well groomed is important, but avoid a very short clip. Your pet’s coat should be frequently brushed to avoid tangling, skin conditions and discomfort. Bath them every 15 days to keep cool.
Summertime is good for gardening, but many of these products may be harmful or even toxic to animals. Dogs and cats can become dangerously ill after ingesting product residue by eating freshly treated grass or licking it off their paws.
As the mercury soars, it becomes difficult for stray dogs to find water. Leave a cemented bowl filled with water near your gate, in your garden or on the terrace. This will also help the birds and other stray animals.
Remember, these little yet focused acts of concern can go a considerable way in helping the stray animals and birds beat the scorching heat. Keep some water for the birds or any other animals in front of your house or balconies.
