Though the Tamil Nadu government did not declare a holiday on Monday after chief minister J Jayalalithaa health condition worsened on Sunday, some schools in Chennai took independent decisions and declared a holiday. However, these schools did not state any particular reason for declaring a holiday.

There was no further information on the condition of Jayalalithaa who suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening.Schools like A M Jain in Meenambakkam and Vani Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School in KK Nagar sent out a message on Monday morning stating that there would be no classes. Thomas Parker Waller Primary School on Anna Salai also announced a holiday while another branch associated with the school remained open.

Schools including PSBB, KK Nagar, and Vidya Mandir, Mylapore, were functioning as usual. Schools in Coimbatore didn’t declare a holiday as “there was no instruction from the education department.”Parents were a confused lot on Monday morning. There were contradictory messages in parents’ WhatsApp groups. A number of social media messages regarding holidays had been doing the rounds since Sunday evening. However, education department refuted them. Principal Secretary to school education, D Sabitha and school director S Kanappan maintained that Monday would be a regular working day.
