Have you ever thought that a pair of shoe would be acquired for Rs 3 crore. But that is the reality A pair of 1972 Nike Waffle Flat Moon Shoe has fetched a world record $ 437,500 that is Rs 3 crore at Sotheby’s and Stadium Goods online auction.
Miles Nadal who had acquired all but one of the 100 pairs in a private sale last for $ 850,000, returned to take the last one – “Moon Shoe” – for a value that was more than 50% of the entire first lot of 99 pairs and for times higher than the previous world auction record for a pair of shoes.
Nadal will display the collection at his private museum. Nike has originally created “Moon Shoe” for runners at the 1972 Olympic Trials. Each of the 10-odd pairs was hand-cobbled by one of the company’s earliest employees Geoff Hollister.
The shoes are made of nylon and sewn together with fishing line. The outsoles – shaped with waffle irons – are in two pieces as there was no better technology available then.
Sotheby’s and Stadium Goods have announced that Nadal has acquired the 1972 Nike Waffle Racing Flat ‘Moon Shoe’ for $437,500 – more than four times the previous world auction record for any pair of sneakers, and in multiples of their pre-sale high estimate of $160,000.
