Nature Forever Society, in collaboration with Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and various corporates, has undertaken a significant campaign to clean up the rivers. The initiative aims to remove all forms of non-biodegradables, including plastics, glass, and other foreign materials, from the river bed, resulting in the detoxification of the river and its surroundings.
The primary objective of this campaign is to create a pollution-free environment by eliminating the presence of harmful waste from the river. By cleaning the river, we aim to prevent water choking during monsoons, ultimately reducing the risk of flooding in the area.
On May 20, 2023, the first River Cleanup Activity took place in collaboration with CRISIL Foundation. A total of 62 enthusiastic volunteers participated in the River Cleanup drive at kakadbhatti River, located within the scenic Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Mumbai. During the cleanup, an impressive 25 bags filled with small plastic items and non-biodegradable waste were collected from the kakadbhatti River.
This successful cleanup event has laid the foundation for future river cleanups in partnership with various corporates before the onset of monsoon, ensuring the detoxification of rivers across the region.
The River Cleanup Campaign plays a vital role in removing small pieces of plastics, glass, and other foreign materials that litter the dried riverbed due to human activities. By conducting pre-monsoon river cleanups, we aim to avert waterlogging and subsequent flooding in Mumbai, making the city more resilient to the challenges posed by heavy rainfall.
