Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, the telecom unit of Reliance Industries Ltd, kicked off it’s services with an aggressive announcement by company chairman Mukesh Ambani at its 42nd annual general meeting in Mumbai . Ambani announced that the company will offer mobile phone data rates of as low as Rs.50 per GB compared to the much higher current rates, signalling a price war in the world’s fastest-growing telecom market.

Reliance Jio’s 4G network, which covers 18,000 cities and towns, and over 200,000 villages, expects to cover 90% of India’s population by March, chairman Mukesh Ambani said at Reliance Industries annual meeting. He also said that Reliance Jio will move India from data shortage to data abundance and called it the cusp of a “digital revolution”.

Announcing a tariff plan which will reward data users for increased usage, Ambani also said that voice calls on the network would be free.
