An international rally urging the Indian government to enact powerful laws against animal cruelty will take place Sept. 18 in 70 cities around the world, including 50 in India, 10 in the United States, and five in Australia. Organizers of the rally, India Unites for Animals (#IUFA), expect thousands of people in India and abroad to march in solidarity against the growing cases of extreme animal abuse in the country.
Humane Society International/India, in support of #IUFA, has lobbied the Indian government to replace the weak existing Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 with the much delayed new animal welfare bill.

To effectively counter the recent spate of animal abuse in India, HSI/India in partnership with People for Animals launched the #NoMore50 campaign that calls for higher penalties for animal cruelty, from the inadequate Rs 50 maximum penalty that’s currently in place. In addition to the support received from a dozen MPs and a large and diverse group of people, Poonam Mahajan, MP from North Mumbai, submitted a private member bill favouring the campaign in the parliament.

The animal lovers  “It gives us immense hope to see people taking up the issue of animal cruelty with seriousness and urgency. Nevertheless, the incidents of animal abuse have continued to increase because the law has failed to punish the culprits adequately and deter others. I urge people to mark their presence for this rally in large numbers and urge the government to guarantee stronger laws for animals.”

The past year has seen some of the most heinous acts of animal cruelty in India, leaving a shocked and saddened public that is now demanding stronger laws and punishment for the perpetrators. From physically assaulting a police horse, Shaktiman, to stabbing dogs to death and setting puppies ablaze, each horrific case highlighted the inability of the current law to protect animals.
