After plastic rice issue going viral, from Hyderabad, there is this talk of plastic idlis from Chennai. There is no clarity if the idlis are made from plastic rice or any plastic sheets are being used while making the idlis. It could be that the plastic sheets are being ladi on the idli making plates instead of a loth.
Reports of Plastic Rice sale has created a sensation. Telugu Media reported the supply of plastic rice for poor in ration quota couple of days ago. Now, We hear about plastic idly in another Southern State.
It is learnt that plastic sheet was being used in the vessel for putting the idlis on it and then going for the steaming. People say that the plastic sheet react to the heat and then they contaminate the idlis with chemicals which is very bad to the health. But so far no confirmation over the matter was received. Some people say that the said plastic rice could have been used for making the idli batter.
It is reported that food safety Officials have conducted raids on few medium-range hotels in Chennai’s Anna Nagar & Teynampet. They came to know that plastic sheets have been used in the preparation of idlis. Plastic sheets weighing as much as 11 kgs has been seized from these hotels.
In Anna Nagar alone, Food Safety Officials recovered 6 kg plastic sheet after raids in over 30 hotels. About 5 kg plastic sheet was seized in raids at Nungambakkam of Teynampet mandal.
Chemicals used for the preparation of plastic will make such Idlis harmful for consumption. It could lead to digestion problems and liver cancer as well.It is common that people are using a platic sheet on the plates while serving the food these days. Thin layer of plastic is used for packing the food also. Generally it is harmful if the food reacts with the plastic when it is very hot.
