The one-time poll could be a reality soon.. It could be implemented for the first time in 2029. In his Independence Day address last month, PM Modi made a strong
pitch for “One nation, one election”, contending that frequent polls were creating hurdles in the country’s progress.
“The nation has to come forward for ‘one nation, one election’,” he had said.
The BJP had also promised “One Nation One Election” in its manifesto and government sources said they are hopeful that there will be aconsensus among all parties to implement it, .
But some political parties are against the idea of one nation one poll.
The Opposition, though, has staunchly opposed the idea so far,red-flagging the constitutional issues. But the BJP is pushing hard for the same. Former President Kovind has already worked out the modalities and has submitted a detailed report to the Government in this regard.
