Telangana Minister for Home Mahmood Ali has triggered a controversy by making comments on what women should wear. While responding to questions on the incident in which a college in the Old City of Hyderabad asked girls to remove their burqas before writing an examination.
HM Ali said, “You can wear whatever you want to but don’t dress like Europeans it can create problems. Women wearing fewer clothes create trouble, people feel relaxed if women wear more clothes.
They can wear clothes like traditional Muslims or Hindus with the ‘pallu’ on their head. Dressing in such a manner would gain respect from an individual.
Several girl students of Women’s Degree College, Santosh Nagar, Hyderabad, came to the college wearing hijabs to write their Urdu Medium Degree exams.
But, the college officials asked them to remove their hijabs before entering the exam hall.
Wearing fewer clothes is not right. Wearing clothes with full body covered is right the Home Minister opined. But some ladies and girls did not like the comments of the Home Minister.
They said that the girls or women will wear whatever they like and that the Minister has no right to suggest or restrict on the matter.
