I and B Ministry to control Online content and News Portals

The Government issued an order bringing online films and Audio visual programmes , news ad current affairs content on online platform sunder the information and Broadcasting ministry.

The notification was signed by the President of India, Ramnath Kovind and it was issued on Monday. In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (3) of article 77 of the constitution, the President hereby makes the rules further to amend the Government of India (Allocation of Business ) rules 1961.

The Digital media and the online media now come under the purview of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (Soochana aur Prasaran Mantralaya under entry 22.

The new rules will come into force at once. Under V A. Digital media and online media according to 22 A Films and audio visual programmes made available by online content provides and under 23 B. News and current affairs content on the online platform will come under the purview of the Ministry of I and B.

These rules may be called as the Government of India (allocation of Business ) Three Hundred and fifty seventh Amendment rules 2020.

The I and B Ministry stressed on the need to regulate digital media earlier and had asked the court that it may start by appointing a committee of persons as amicus for laying down of guidelines in reference to the regulation of hate speech in media.

The centre earlier suggested that the Digital Media needs to be regulated. The Ministry also wanted regulation on the OTT platforms also.
