14 April refreshes our memories about the most devastating Fire and explosion that occurred on warship “SS Fort Stikine” of Royal Navy, Great Britain,carrying mixed cargo of cotton bales, gold and ammunition including 1400 tons of explosives that caught fire which was berthed at Victoria Dock Bombay port on 14 April 1944.
The snarling jaws of this devastating fire covered almost half of the port city in a short time and swallowed the lives of 66 gallant fire officers and firemen. To commemorate the sacrifice of the Fire Fighters the Government of India decided to observe 14* April as Fire Service Day by all Fire Services in the Country.
This day is also observed as “Martyr’s Day” to pay homage to those brave firefighters who lost their lives in the Victoria Dock Mumbai port explosion and all fire fighters who have laid down their lives in saving the lives and property of the citizens,and also to make the public conscious of the necessity for reducing fire losses and motivate them towards Fire Prevention.
During the year 2022, many brave fire fighters across the country have laid down their lives in the noble cause of saving the lives and property of citizens.
