England players were in huge demand in the 2017 IPL auction which took place in Bangalore today. Rising Pune Supergaints bought England all rounder Ben Stokes for whopping 14.5 crores -most expensive overseas player in the IPL history so far and they made Steve Smith captain. That means Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be playing only as a player this season. Stokes, who has been in terrific form in recent times seems to be the best choice among the foreign players who were taken by different franchises. He is also the second highest paid player among the currently active IPL players – behind Bangalore Royal Challengers and Indian captain Virat Kohli (15 crore).

Another English fast bowler Tymal Mills was the second most expensive as he was bought 12 crore (USD 1.8 million approx) by Royal Challengers Bangalore, who missed the title by a whisker last year, losing to Sun Risers Hyderabad in a thrilling grand finale.

Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy and Chris Jordan also got good prices. Morgan, who played for Sunrisers was bought for Rs 2 crore (USD 300,000 approx) by Kings XI Punjab, while the batsman Jason Roy was taken by Gujrat Lions for 1 crore. Sun Risers preferred Chris Jordan for INR 50 lakhs.

Afghanistan allrounder Mohammad Nabi, 18-year-old leggie Rashid Khan and UAE batsman Chirag Suri were also in the list, becoming the first Associate players after Netherlands’ Ryan ten Doeschate to get an IPL bid. Sun Risers bought both the Afghanistan players – Rashid for 4 crore and Nabi for 30 lakh
Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was bought by Delhi Daredavils for 2 crore Indian rupees and
New Zealand allrounder Corey Anderson for INR 1 crore . They also took South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada for 5 crore (USD 750,000 approx) and Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins for INR 4.5 crore.

Unfortunately there were no bids for Indian senior players – Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Pragyan Ojha, Cheteshwar Pujara, Parvez Rasool and RP Singh. But several uncapped players were picked in the auction, which may have surprised some cricket lovers.

Mohammad Siraj, who had good Ranji season was bought by Sunrisers for INR 2.6 crore. Left-arm seamer Aniket Choudhary went for 2 crore. K Gowtham was taken by Mumbai for 2 crore.

Pawan Negi, who was bought for INR 8.5 crore last year and then released by Delhi, was bought by RCB for 1 crore.
