Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Taraka Rama Rao said the GHMC was taking up works to remove bottlenecks on 47 stormwater drains in the city at a cost of Rs.230 crore.

This was being done to minimize inundation and water logging in some areas of the city under the long term measure being planned by the GHMC.

Focus is on clearing encroachments on nalas to ensure free flow of water, the Minister said during question hour in the Legislative Council.

In addition to the separate action plan being taken up for the widening of nalas by clearing encroachments, 13 chronic water stagnation points have been identified in the city.

Efforts are on to fix the water stagnation points under the long term plan, Rama Rao said.

This apart, the GHMC has identified 346 vulnerable points on roads, which are prone to frequent water stagnation.

These points will be repaired at a cost of Rs.121.44 crore. “By next monsoon, all these points will be rectified,” he said.
