Congress veteran leader, Digvijaya Singh signalled his intention to throw his hat into the ring of the party Presidential elections. Yesterday he has taken the nomination papers and would be filing them today.
Diggy Raja Singh, who was Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister during the Congress’s troubled decade from 1993 to 2003, said he will file his nomination papers for the top post.
Singh has arrived in Delhi from Kerala and would file his papers on Friday, the last day for nominations. Congress central election authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry is said to be unavailable.
The surprise move is being seen by a section of leaders within the party as either a part of the leadership’s “Plan B” or a “smokescreen” to pressurise Gehlot the CM to accept the leadership’s wish that he contest the top post and leave the decision on his successor in the state to the Gandhis.
The names of Digvijaya Singh, KC Venugopal, and Mallikarjun Kharge had emerged as frontrunners after a question mark was put on Ashok Gehlot’s run for Congress chief post following the rebellion in Rajasthan Congress..
Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, is also in the race for the October 17 AICC presidential election.
