Death toll mounts to 5000?

The death toll in the three big earthquakes of 7.8, 7.6, and 6.0 magnitude that hit Turkey and Syria in the last two days has crossed 4,500, as per a report by the Associated Press.

Unofficial sources say that the deaths could have crossed around five thousand.

Thousands more have been injured and the search for survivors is on, with several nations, including India, sending in supplies and assisting with rescue operations.

At least 2,921 have died in Turkey and 1,444 in Syria, reported the media quoting figures from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the Damascus Government and rescue workers.

The death toll is expected to rise. The epicenter of the first quake was near Nurdagi in Gaziantep province, the Syrian border.

The second quake was near Ekinozu in nearby Kahramanmaraş province, and the third near Goksun in the same province.

The first batch of earthquake relief materials from India, comprising NDRF Search and Rescue Teams, specially trained dog squads, medical supplies, drilling machines, left for Turkey early on Tuesday morning, hours.
