CS on heavy rains

Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari directed the District Collectors to take precautions to avoid any loss of life and property as the Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains for two days across the state. CS held a teleconference with the District Collectors today on the precautions to be taken in the wake of heavy rains in the state.

CS Santhi Kumari said that there are heavy rains in the state as well as its border areas and the collectors should be prepared to deal effectively with any kind of sudden calamity. There is a possibility of cloud burst in some areas. She directed that control rooms should be opened in every district collectors office as well as in GHMC and state Secretariat. She emphasised the need for proper surveillance so that people do not venture outside.

She instructed that an officer should be specially appointed to supervise the overflowing streams. CS
stated that district collectors can take the decision to declare a holiday for schools in the districts in view of the rains. An advance plan for evacuating people from flood-affected areas and setting up resettlement camps should be prepared, she added.

She informed that people should be made aware of the precautions to be taken due to heavy rains and floods from time to time through the media.

Besides taking appropriate measures to prevent contamination of tanks which are good sources of water in villages and towns, she said that bleaching powder and chlorination should be taken up to prevent the spread of diseases.

Medical teams have been alerted and appropriate medicines have been kept ready in all primary health centres.

She informed that currently NDRF teams are in Hyderabad and Vijayawada and if there is any need, these NDRF teams can be deployed. Collectors of the districts in the catchment areas of Godavari and Krishna rivers have been directed to be more alert. She warned that due to heavy floods and rains, the local people may build mud pits in some places, and due to this, the low-lying areas may be flooded. Irrigation department officials are advised to prevent such activities from taking place.

Collectors were directed to work in coordination with Police, Irrigation Department,Disaster Management Department, Panchayat Raj and other departments in the district. In addition to alerting the Monsoon Emergency Teams in GreaterHyderabad, they have also been ordered to keep vigilance against opening manholes.
