The tally in the Telangana Assembly of legislators who has pledged allegiance to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) reached 100 on Wednesday as another MLA of the main opposition Congress party switched loyalty.

The strength of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in the Assembly is likely to cross the century mark with Congress MLA from Kollapur B. Harshavardhan Reddy announcing his decision to cross over on Wednesday. The party also had the backing of a nominated MLA, which has taken its tally to 101. The MLA also said that if necessary, he would resign from the Assembly and seek re-election

Harshvardhan is the ninth Congress MLA to defect to TRS this month. With the latest defection, the Congress tally in the 119-member Assembly has plunged to 10.

Under Anti-Defection Law, if two-third legislators of a party defect, they will not attract disqualification. Congress may even lose the status of the main opposition party as it requires 10 percent of the total strength of the House.

In a related development, senior Adivasi leader Soyam Bapu Rao, who was elected from Both, shifted to the BJP

The TRS had 88 members in the 119-member House when it was constituted in December. Initially, two Independents extended their support to the party. So far, nine out of the 19 members of the Congress, including Mr. Reddy, and one of the Telugu Desam Party have announced their decision to join the TRS. The TRS claims five more Congress MLAs are in touch with it.
