The Government today set up a committee to study the best practices for waste management and C & D (Construction and Demolition) processing for Hyderabad. Principal Secretary Municipal Administration Arvind Kumar issued orders today.
Mr Kumar said that the committee is constituted to learn from the best practices and what can, in turn, be implemented in Hyderabad. The committee will study the best practices in the waste management and C&D processing.
The Committee shall visit Indore, Mysore and Surat to study the best practices in waste and C&D management, cost aspects, the process of carrying it out, vehicle management engaged in garbage collection and transportation and any other aspects as emerging during the visit.
The Committee shall make a presentation by 25th Oct, 2019 on its report and the road map for sanitation waste & C&D management for Hyderabad.
Mr Arvind Kumar observed that one of the primary responsibilities of any urban local bodies is maintaining general sanitation and processing of waste management.
GHMC generates waste of about 5500 to 6000 MTs per day, he said and added that while it’s being processed 100% at Jawahar Nagar unit, the processes involved in the collection of garbage – both door to door and from locations, its transfer to transfer stations and from there to the final dump yard and then processing of the same, is fraught with challenges and there are serious implementation issues which needs to be addressed to ensure scientific management of waste management in an institutionalized mechanism.
He emphasized that there are process challenges, implementation challenges and other related issues which need to be addressed. Further, C&D waste remains a challenge and the gap between what’s the present capacity to process C&D waste and what’s generated in GHMC is huge and one needs to work out a sustainable mechanism for processing C&D waste, he said.
