The ‘Bonalu’ festival, reflecting Telangana’s rich culture, vibrant traditions, and time-tested values, was celebrated with enthusiasm on Friday at Dr MCR HRD Institute. The entire campus of the Institute, which displayed a carnival-like atmosphere, was enveloped in a festive mood.
The Officers, Faculty, Staff, and Trainees,irrespective of caste, creed, and religion, participated in the celebrations, in large numbers.
The colorful Bonalu procession started from RamadasuRangasthali and culminated at the temple on the campus. Scores of women, dressed in typical Telangana attire, carried bonam in clay pots on their heads, and offered it to the Goddess Mahankali at the temple.
The rhythmic drumbeats, energetic dances, and melodious folk songs were the visual feast for the spectators. Quite a few employees gave in to the festive mood, danced energetically, and captured the hearts of every one present.
Sri Benhur Mahesh DuttEkka, IAS, DG of the Institute & Principal Secretary to Govt of Telangana,said that even though Bonalu is animportant festival of Telangana, it is now being celebrated not only across the country but also abroad. “Bonalu, which has been an integral part of Telangana’s rich culture, has not only survived but also thrived over the centuries. It is a testimony of commitment for co-existence of faiths and oneness of humanity in the Telangana region”, he added.
Dr K Tirupataiah, IFS (Retd), Chief Consultant (Training) said that, as a part of Bonalu,special poojas are performed for Goddess Yellamma, one of the many regional forms of Goddess Mahakali. “The festival is also considered a thanksgiving to the Goddess for fulfillment of vows”, he added.
The proactive participation of Military Engineer Services (MES) Probationers, belonging to 12 States from across the country, added a national color to the festivities.
“The participation in the Bonalu festivalgave us an opportunity to enjoy the rich culture of Telangana,” said the MES Probationers unanimously.
The sumptuous lunch, which consisted of delicacies from Telangana State, was relished by one and all.
