The TS biodiversity strategy and action plan was released today by Dr. Rajat Kumar IAS, Spl.Chief Secretary to Govt., Irrigation &CAD and Environment, Science and Technology Dept and Chairman, Telangana State Biodiversity Board in the presence of the Shri. C Achalender Reddy, IFS (Retd.) Chairperson of National Biodiversity Authority, Chennai, Mr.Suneel Padale, UNDP, Prof. M.Vijjulatha, Vice Chancellor, Telangana Mahila Vishwavidyalayam, Koti, Hyderabad. Dr.Valli Manickam, Director, CIPS gave a brief overview of the plan.
The State of Telangana has rich biodiversity and Telangana State Biodiversity Board (TSBDB) is making all efforts to conserve the biodiversity of the region. As part of these efforts of the Board, TSBDB along with Centre for Innovations in Public Systems (CIPS) of ASCI, has in consultation with several stakeholders worked towards preparation of this Action Plan.
Telangana is the first State to bring out the Telangana State Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan by incorporating the key factors post adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Frame Work held in December, 2022. The plan has used various tools like Biodiversity Expenditure review of various departments, BIOFIN to calculate the contribution of the efforts made by departments like forestry, agriculture, irrigation, animal husbandry, fisheries to name a few, towards conservation of biodiversity.
The plan also mentions the efforts to be taken in developing more resources sharing mechanisms using Access benefit sharing to help optimum use of the bio-resources. Also it explains measures for promoting the conservation of biodiversity through CSR activities of the various PSUs and private sectors units. The scope for Public Private Partnerships is also detailed in the plan.
Focus on capacity building and creation of awareness on conservation of biodiversity in the state and also carrying out Research are also part of the Strategy and Action Plan to be implemented from 2023 to 2030 in the State.
At the release of the plan expert committee members, senior officials working the area of biodiversity conservation, NGOs, BMC members and other key officials were present.
