More than 250 barbers were removed from the services of TTD on corruption charges. The barbers are on a hunger strike at Tirumala and are demanding that they should be reinstated by the EO.

The barbers were identified on CC cameras on the complaint of pilgrims that they were demanding and taking bribes during the free tonsure service on Tirumala.

On the other hand, the barbers charged that the new EO was taking a unilateral decision and that he was acting against the welfare of the employees and pilgrims.

The barbers are paid Rs 12 for each tonsure by the TTD. Some of them are full time and some are part-time barbers on the hills. Giving a tip of Rs 10 or 20 to barbers after the tonsure has become a routine on the hills.
