The BJP in Telangana had many leaders, but the party could not cross the double digit when it comes to elections. But all the time they had pipe dreams of coming to power. It was under the influence and alliance with one party or the other.
When ever they contested on their own, they could not cross the double digit. Many of them lost the deposits. It was same wth the Hyderabad parliament seat. Even Venkaiah could not defeat the MIM in Old city.
Since the local body polls are likely to be held in Telangana in the next few months, the party leadership is of the opinion that if Sanjay is made the party chief, the party could perform well in the polls.
During his earlier stint as BJP State chief, Sanjay organised Praja Sangrama Yatra, which got an encouraging response from many areas in the State.
An internal report submitted by central leaders during the last Assembly elections also suggested that Sanjay was more popular than any other BJP leader in the State, which is said to have been among factors that made the BJP leadership to once again look towards Sanjay, according to party sources.
BJP here looks like a disciplined party from the outside, but they have internal bickering more than the Congress party. There are caste feelings also. There are few leaders and more groups.
The cadre base is also less when compared to the BJP and TDP. Few leaders thrive and survive in the party and it also will not cross the double digit.
