The leaders of the Opposition Akhilesh, Mayawathi and Mamatha didi demanded that the country must go back to the Ballot papers and that the EVMs should be removed. The leaders are of the opinion that the EVMs can be manipulated and rigged. The vote verification machines which were fixed to EVMs malfunctioned in some places during the by-polls and the opposition made a hue and cry that ballots must come back.

The Chief Election Commissioner Rawat said that the vote verification machines were light sensitive and that some of the polling officials were untrained and that they could not use them properly. However, more training was going on for the usage of machines he said.

Akhilesh, Mayawathi

The idea of going back to the ballot paper was not right he opined. Any issues with the EVMs and verification machines attached to the EVMs can be sorted out and they would give the presentation and also display with the same for the benefit of the leaders and will satisfy them.

The BJP leaders were also ready for the verification of the EVMs and also the verification machines. Earlier the verification machines to the EVMs were attached as the opposition was challenging that the votes were going for the BJP. Now they are not happy with the verification machines.

But all said and done the political parties can decide on whatever system they want to have the CEC clarified..
