Gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad, who is wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, was killed in an encounter on Thursday by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi.
Another person, Ghulam, with a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head, was also killed in the encounter led by Deputy SP Navendu and Deputy SP Vimal. Police recovered sophisticated foreign-made weapons from the deceased.
Till last year, young Asad Ahmed did not have any criminal case lodged against him. But by February this year, he became the ‘most wanted’ man in Uttar Pradesh after leading half-a-dozen shooters who killed Umesh Pal in broad daylight on a busy street in Prayagraj on February 24.
Mohammed Ghulam, a close aide of Atiq Ahmed, was another accused in the case. In March, the Prayagraj administration deployed bulldozers to demolish his home.
Days after Umesh Pal’s murder, Uttar Pradesh Police had gunned down a 24-year-old Arbaaz wanted for his alleged role in the killing. Umesh Pal was a key witness in the 2005 murder of a sitting lawmaker Raju Pal.
According to police, Arbaaz, Asad and Ghulam were involved in the killing of Pal.
Umesh Pal and his police guard Sandeep Nishad were shot dead in Prayagraj in the broad-daylight in February.
