Aravind visits Koti women’s college

Principal Secretary Municipal Administration Arvind Kumar today visited the Osmania University College for Women (formerly Hyderabad residency) at Koti and inspected the restoration works being taken up. The restoration works are taken up in collaboration with the World Monument Fund and other donors. British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia participated in the restoration of cemeteries. Dr. Helen Philon, Co-Founder and Trustee, Deccan Heritage Foundation, Mr. Stephane Block Saloz, Trustee, Deccan Heritage Foundation, Ms Amita Baig, Regional Representative India, World Monuments Fund, Mr Richard Broyd and Hugh Monk, from the World Monuments Fund were also present.

Mr Kumar went round the Durbar hall, east and west wings, Empress gate Rang Mahal gardens, British Cemetery and the Old wells. He asked the architects working on the restoration project to submit the restoration proposals for the east & west wings, physics and chemistry blocks, gardens and historic gateways. He also asked the officials from urban development department to explore the possibility of linking the historic gardens into the Musi river front, the proposals which are being finalized by AFD a French based organization. He enquired about the number of girl students staying in the girls hostel and inspected the kitchen.

University College for women, Osmania University is located on the Northern banks of the River Musi in the City of Hyderabad. It is one of the first institutions established in 1924 for women’s education in the city of Hyderabad. This college, housed at various locations in its initial years, was shifted to the vacant buildings and the site of Former British Residency in the year 1950. The site and the historic buildings were originally the home and the office of the British Resident from 1779 to 1947. It was once an important architectural landmark associated with the political, social and other important events in the city of the Hyderabad.

The prestigious University College for Women, playing a very important role in women’s education, is located in such a site whose significance crosses the borders of our country, making it a very important cultural asset, an irreplaceable resource. This significance was first officially recognized by Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) by putting this property in its heritage listing as a Grade IIB structure, bringing it under its protection status.
