The 13th national conference of AIDS Society of India (13th ASICON) was formally inaugurated today in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. The conference is being held from 3 to 5 April 2022, on the theme of “Confronting Pandemics with Proficiency, Precision and Persistence”, in academic partnership with India’s National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP), World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations joint programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union), Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) and Society for Health, Allied Research and Education (SHARE).
The inaugural programme of 13th ASICON began with paying homage to HIV medical experts and scientists who were deeply involved in the fight to #endAIDS but we lost them during the COVID-19 pandemic. Entire atmosphere became sombre as delegates paid sincere tributes to those we have lost during the pandemic. Some of them include noted microbiologist Professor (Dr) Tapan Dhole, former Vice President of ASI and former Head of Microbiology at Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS); Dr David Katzenstein, virologist and HIV researcher of Zimbabwe and Associate Medical Director, AIDS Clinical Trial Unit at Stanford University; Dr James Hakim, who was on Governing Council of International AIDS Society (IAS) and first Director, University of Zimbabwe Clinical Research Centre; Dr Rajendra Kapila, Infectious Diseases Expert, Rutgers University, Philadelphia; Samrajit Jana, public health scientist of All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health who was notable for his vital work with sex workers in Sonagachi; Dr Oscar Fernandes, Member of Parliament (MP) and head of Forum of Parliamentarians on HIV/AIDS; and Dr Luc Montagnier, 2008 Nobel Prize winner for his discovery of HIV.
