On November 14, the moon will appear the largest since 1948 as it makes its closest approach to earth. The next time the moon comes so close is in 2034.
In its elliptical journey, the closest point the moon gets to earth is called perigee and its farthest point apogee.
Depending on various aspects in a calendar year, the moon comes closer to earth 13-14 times, but not always during full moon.
As per astronomical data, a full moon at perigee occurs around three to five times a year.
A supermoon occurs when the sun, moon and Earth align and the moon’s orbit is the closest to Earth.
Mr Raghunandan Kumar of the Planetary Society, India said, “This year the moon reached its closest point to earth (perigee) 13 times and November 14 will be the closest. It again will be the close in 2034.”
The best time to watch the moon is at sunset. On November 14, the moon will rise at 5.45 pm.
Report said that on this day, the moon will appear 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than the average.
