The TG Assembly on Tuesday passed two key Bills — the Young India Physical Education and Sports University of Telangana Bill, 2024 and The Telangana Universities (Amendment) Bill — in just five minutes without any debate. The proceedings unfolded amid disorder, with BRS and BJP MLAs storming the well of the House to protest against the Congress government.
The ruckus began when the House reconvened after a two-hour break following Question Hour. BRS MLAs rushed to the Speaker’s podium, demanding a debate on the controversial Lagacharla land acquisition issue. They raised concerns about the arrest of farmers protesting against the acquisition, including an incident where a jailed farmer was handcuffed while being shifted to a hospital. Despite the uproar, Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar refused to entertain their demands, urging the MLAs to return to their seats. Sridhar Babu introduced the Bills, the BRS MLAs carrying placards targeting the Congress government intensified their sloganeering and attempted to approach the Speaker’s chair.
Dozens of marshals were deployed to prevent them from disrupting the proceedings. Adding to the commotion, BJP MLAs also stormed the well of the House, demanding immediate implementation and legal sanctity for the Six Guarantees promised by the Congress during the Assembly elections. They insisted on a debate to address delays in fulfilling these guarantee. Undeterred by the chaos, the Speaker pushed forward with the legislative process, announcing the passage of both Bills without debate. The entire process took just five minutes, drawing criticism from opposition members for sidelining democratic procedures. The Young India Physical Education and Sports University of Telangana Bill, 2024 paves the way for the establishment of a dedicated sports university in Hyderabad. The institution aims to promote education and research in sports while serving as a centre of excellence for nurturing talented athletes through international best practices. The university is also authorised to establish satellite campuses, sports hostels, and schools across the state.The Telangana Universities (Amendment) Bill renames Telangana Mahila Vishwavidyalayam (Women’s University, Koti) to Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University and includes it in the Telangana Universities.
