Born on August 17, 1963, in the small town of Kumbakonam, Shanmugam Shankar graduated as a Mechanical Engineer. The ace director got his first break as script writer when producer SA Chandrasekhar spotted his talent by watching one of his stage plays.
After assisting many filmmakers, Shankar got his big opportunity in 1993, when he made his directorial debut with Gentleman, which became a blockbuster hit. Shanmugam Shankar also won the Filmfare Award for Best Director for Gentleman.
