Tomatoes the regular vegetable of the common man has no value for the producer that is the farmer. It is not giving any profit to him.
The grower is dumping the tomatoes on the streets as he is unable to get the remunerative rates. But they are sold at a higher rate in the regular markets.
Apart from these, tomatoes were also being sold at very affordable prices ranging from Rs 15 to Rs 20 a kg. Many of households are using Tomatoes and also onions for curry as they are affordable.
Ladies are going for Tomato pickles by drying the tomatoes on the roof.
“Despite unusual rains lashing several areas in Telangana heavy arrival of tomatoes can be seen in the market. Last year tomatoes were sold at Rs 45 to Rs 50 per kg,” said one of the sellers at the Gudimalkapur vegetable market.
The higher prices made people become more selective when it comes to buying vegetables.
There are others who say they were preferring to miss the fun of shopping for vegetables in the market and instead order online to avoid the hot summer conditions.
