The Tomato farmers are in deep trouble in some districts of Andhra Pradesh. As they are not getting a remunerative price for the produce, they have no other option but to dump the tomatoes on the roads, Highways and fields apart from feeding them to the animals.
Farmers came with tractor-trolleys carrying tomatoes and agitated for remunerative rates. They dumped the produce on the side of the highway. They are demanding a Minimum support price.
The heavy vehicles moving on the highways had trouble crossing the heaps of tomatoes.
The farmers have demanded better procurement rates from wholesale buyers. “Tomatoes are being bought by wholesalers for ₹100 per crate, which is nearly 25 kg in quantity.
This is a huge loss. If the rate is close to ₹300 per crate, then it is a no-profit and no loss matter for the farmers. They are not even getting Rs two per KG.
Tonnes of Tomatoes are being dumped on the roads and also Highways.
