Selling movies to the OTT platforms very early is said to be one of the causes of the crisis in the film industry. The theatres are not getting enough audience as they are waiting to see the movies on the OTT platforms at home.
That is the reason why the distributors are wanting to release the films to the OTT after eight weeks of the gap from the theatres.
A senior producer of the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce said: “If producers prefer “crazy prices” from OTT platforms, they will continue causing loss to distributors and exhibitors.
If this trend continues, no distributor or exhibitor will buy films for screening them in theatres. ”But there are some cases where the producers were saved because of the OTT platforms.
Some films which could not get a good response at the theatres were viewed at home on OTT by the audience and they could make breakeven.
So OTT must be taken as a complementary medium for the movies, and they must be released giving sufficient time to the theatres.
The ticket rates must also come down at the theatres so that people will not bother about the OTT.
