Over 1000 killed in Afghan earthquake

An earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan early Wednesday, killing at least 1000 people, the country’s supreme leader said.

“Hundreds of houses have been destroyed and unfortunately one thousand civilians have been martyred and more than 600 injured,” Hibatullah Akhundzada said in a statement .

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) put the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.1, though the US Geological Survey (USGS) said it was 5.9.
The epicentre was about 44km (27 miles) from the city of Khost, near the Pakistani border, at a depth of 51km, the USGS said.
