It was a dream come true for a whopping 215 underprivileged students of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions who proved their mettle in the country’s toughest IIT-JEE and NEET entrance exams this year.
For the first time in the history of TSWREIS, 80 students secured seats in IITs/NITs, while as many as 135 students got seats in MBBS this year. What makes their feat so special is that all the toppers are the first-generation sons and daughters of beedi workers, small farmers, agricultural labourers, road-side tea sellers, vegetable vendors, masons, auto drivers, peons, security guards, etc.
The minister for Scheduled Caste Development Department, Koppula Eshwar congratulated the toppers for their outstanding achievement and felicitated the toppers at a function held at social welfare residential college Gowlidoddi, Hyderabad.
The minister said “ it’s a golden lettered moment in the history of government residential educational institutions and thanks to the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for approving free long term intensive coaching programs to prepare the bright SC/ST students for competitive exams on par with the private institutions.
Dr RS Praveen Kumar, Secretary TSWREIS said “every year less than 10 students used to get medical seats in undivided Andhra Pradesh, thanks to the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and minister for SCDD Koppula Eshwar, the number of students getting into medical colleges risen to 135 in 2019, a incredible achievement by any standard and success these poor students means a lot to their poverty stricken families”.
