Mahavir Harinavanasthali National park an Oasis of vegetation in the desert of concrete buildings in Hyderabad.Is situated in the south East of Hyderabad City on National High way towards Vijayawada. 15 km away from city centre.
The park is named after Mahavir, A jain Saint, In commemoration of his 2500thnirvan anniversary in the year 1975. The park was officially declared as a national park in 1994.
The place where the park is located was once a private ground for the Nizam, rulers of Hyderabad. A deer park was set up in order to preserve this precious heritage and rehabilitate it. It was donated by the Nizam to establish a national park.
This park is spread over an area of nearly 4000 acres. Preservation of the natural Eco- system, Improving awareness and promotion of eco-tourism are the main objectives for which the park is being managed.
The main forest type is southern Dry Deciduous Forests. Some areas covered with grasslands and thorn forest. The fauna includes spotted deer, black buck, Four Horned Antelope peafowls, wild boar, porcupine, monitor lizard, different species of snakes and birds.
