The BJP’s ‘soot-boot’ jibe was an apparent response to Rahul’s Gandhi’s ‘suit boot ki sirkar’ remark that the Congress leader made on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for wearing a suit which had his name monogrammed over it during a meeting with the then US President Barack Obama in 2015.
The suit was sold for Rs 4.31 crore in an auction later.Congress president Rahul Gandhi shunned his white kurta-pajama for blue jeans and a black jacket as he attended a rock concert in Meghalaya capital Shillong.
The event organised by the Congress to kick-start the party’s campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections in the northeastern state also gave the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ample fodder to attack Rahul Gandhi and his party.
Hitting back at the Congress president using the now famous ‘soot-boot’ jibe, the BJP’s Meghalaya unit claimed that the cost of the black jacket that Rahul Gandhi wore was nearly Rs 70,000. The party tweeted a photo of Rahul Gandhi along with one showing the cost of the jacket on one of the online fashion stores
