The 18-year-old Aditi Ashok is on course to become the sixth Indian woman to win a medal. Aditi had an inspiring run in the second round of the Women’s Individual event on as she tied 8th, while her score read six under par.
The professional Indian golfer had already made history after she became the first Indian to win the Lalla Aicha Tour School and secure her Ladies European Tour card for the 2016 season. The win also made her the youngest winner of a Q School for an international tour. At the young age of 18, Aditi made her mark on Indian sport. The teen remains India’s only woman golfer at Rio 2016.
Aditi had qualified for the Olympics on the basis of the Olympic criteria of players being eligible based on the world rankings. According to the criteria, a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top-15 are selected.
After Sakshi Malik became the first Indian to win a medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and break the agonising medal drought in Rio, PV Sindhu is the second woman to win a silver in the finals of women’s badminton singles against Carolina Marin. Sakshi also became the fourth Indian to win a medal for her country, while PV Sindhu, will become the fifth female athlete to etch her name in Indian sports history. Now a golfer has slowly risen to the occassion and created hopes for a third medal at this year’s Olympics.
