Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam bill will be taken up for voting in the Rajya Sabha today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today appealed to the members to see that the Bill was cleared.

The Lok Sabha passed the Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill, with 454 members voting in favour and only two against it after a spirited eight-hour debate in which 60 members participated.

Yesterday Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present during the voting on the bill, which was the first to be passed in the new Parliament building.

The government introduced in Lok Sabha the constitutional amendment bill to reserve one-third of seats in the Lower House and state assemblies for women, reviving a bill pending for 27 years for want of consensus among parties.

The bill’s smooth passage in the Lower House came amid demands from the Opposition to extend similar benefits to women from OBCs and immediate implementation of the measure before the general election in 2024.

However, the government stated the quota would be implemented possibly by 2029 when the census and delimitation exercise is completed.

The PM is in the house to listen to reactions from the members, but he will not be there during the voting on the bill.
